Nightmare Detective Review
Wilson posted at 11:15 PM

Watched Nightmare Detective with ZX, Wilson and SM just now, SOP style. Before starting the review I would need to declare some stuff first. It was me who suggested watching this movie and after this movie I was blacklisted from suggesting movies to watch the next time even though I personally quite like this movie, therefore this review may be subjected to a certain degree of bias.

For some background knowledge, this is a manga-inspired Japanese movie which won award at Venice Film Festive. Basically it is a thriller involving a detective and a man who is able to penetrate into other people's dream trying to solve suicide cases where the victims slashed themselves in their nightmare.

This movie does have the compenents of what a good movie should have, which include suspense, action, humour and a reasonable plot. The male lead actor is supposingly also a very famous pop idol in Japan though I've never heard of him but I feel that he gives me the Jay Chou impression in terms of looks and expression.

The movie mainly revolves around the theme of suicide and to a large extent it is discouraging suicide which I believed is rather common in Japan. It shows that those who attempt to suicide is actually afraid to die even up to the last minute which they decided to take their own lives even though it's too late. However it also exposed the fact that everyone will have a certain level of suicidal thoughts within them, either consciously or sub-consciously which makes us prone to manipulation. On the otherhand, the movie reminded us that we should also remember the happy moments that we enjoyed and realised how fortunate we are and should not take suicide as a quick solution.

Award winning films are often more difficult to understand or appreciate unlike the normal Hollywood or Hong Kong shows. Therefore a fair statement I would have for this movie will be that you will either like it a lot or find it very boring. From a personal point of view it's a 3.5/5 movie.

TMNT Review
Wilson posted at 10:37 PM

Watched TMNT on Sunday before the dinner with Wilson and ZX. Originally wanted to watch Mr Bean's Holiday at Tampines Mall but somehow movie seems to be free that day and the queue went all the way from the cinema to Pastamania. We decided to head to Century Square to try our luck. However there's only first row left for Mr Bean and therefore decided to watch TMNT instead.

Could vaguely recall watching TMNT when I was very young and therefore did somehow looked forward to regaining some of the childhood memories through this movie. Actually I did thought that TMNT the movie will be played by real human like Power Rangers and only when the movie started I realised that it's actually a cartoon.

The plot was boring especially in the start where there's no action and no emotions as well. Then the cartoon-style action begin but no real surprises. There was the effort to make the plot slightly more complicated than the usual TMNT vs bad guys story and place emphasis on the theme of teamwork, nevertheless it's still to childish for older children like me.

Can't really say more about the movie. In short, it's just another cartoon. For grown ups, it's time to grow up.

'300' Review
Wilson posted at 10:16 PM

Yet another movie review? Gonna make this slightly different this time as found my previous reviews too artificial. Let this be a closer to heart review.

'300' represents the 300 spartans who fought along King Leonidas against the massive Persian army. Will they succeed? Go to the cinemas to find out and get back your every dollar worth. Visually it's one of the best around. 300 Spartans with better abs than me, half-naked women and LOTR style-large armies, what else can you expect?

It's not an all action no plot movie and is fairly inspirational as well. As you may have notice certain lines from the movies will appear on your friends' msn nick and you can see more guys training hard suddenly to get the abs as in the movies. On a serious note, '300' is inspirational to one's attitude to life. There's one part which sets deeply in my mind. It's the part where King Leonidas emphasise on being remembered. Many times in life we will have this 'give it a try' attitude and hope for the best outcome and even if the outcome is not in our favour, we are not too affected by it. This isn't exactly the best attitude. We should cherish every opportunity that we have like it's the last and even if we do not succeed, we will have to make sure someone remembers our effort. To sum it up, prepare for glory!

Protege Review
Wilson posted at 5:10 PM

Guess that I'm slightly hooked on writing movie reviews, perhaps I could brush up my English and work for First in the future? After the traumatism from Miss Potter, I found that we really opt to read more movie reviews before heading to the cinemas and hope that through my blog, I can reduce the cursing and swearing at the cinemas after the show. Anyway, thanks for allowing my blog to hit 100hits, finally. Enough of the unrelated stuff, here's my review of Protege.

Movie Summary:
Nick (Daniel Wu) is an undercover from the anti-nacotics to investigate on Kuan (Andy Lau), the head of a powerful drug-trafficking ring. After 7 years as undercover, Nick managed to earn the trust of Kuan and rose to become his Protege and was taught the whole process of drug trafficking. In the meantime, Nick also came into contact with a family of drug abusers who affected him emotionally.

What I think about the movie:
A very informative move, showing the process of drug-trafficking from planting of poppy in the golden triangle, to the manufacturing and distribution of drugs. The movie also sent out a strong anti-drug signal as we can see how the lives of drug abusers are affected by drugs. Nevertheless, it does not make the film appear as a documentary. Humourous conversations and actions ensure constant excitment in the movie. What is lacking in this movie is perhaps a good ending, the ending is probably there because of a need of an ending and seems abrupt and meaningless.

My Rating:
4.0/5 - Recommended star-studded movie. One can really learn a great deal about drugs from this movie.

Ghost Rider Review
Wilson posted at 12:14 AM

Movie Summary:

Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage), a bike stuntman, in a moment of folly made a pact with the Devil, selling his soul in exchange for his dad's health. Years later, the Devil contacted Johnny Blaze and transformed him into the Ghost Rider to help him eliminate his son, 'Black Heart'. Johnny then began his adventure as the Ghost Rider.

What I think about the movie:
A movie with a wide range of genre: Horror, action and a component of comedy. Fairly action packed movie with explosive and fighting scenes every few minutes and few scary scenes bound to shock the faint-hearted. Story line is simple but slightly illogical, just like any other heroic movies. The bad thing about this movie is that the enemies are weak, depriving any exciting and notable fighting scenes.

My Rating:
3.0/5 - Good effort for the actions but poor effort for the plot. Can't blame it really since it's based on a Marvel comic and I can't expect more from a comic.

Miss Potter Review
Wilson posted at 11:54 PM

First time writing a movie review here. Here's what I think about this movie Miss Potter

About this movie:
This movie is set in the 1900's and is about the lifestory of Beatrix Potter, the creator of Benjamin Rabbit. It talks about her life during her 3o's, when she experienced ups and downs in both her lovelife and her career.

What I think about this movie:
For Ms Potter, what she experienced might be ups and downs but to viewers, there's basically no ups and downs in the movie at all. This slow-paced shows really bore audience, especially in the start. Condensing a few years time into an hour plus movie is difficult, unfortunately the director did not do a good job and the film seems segmented. The ending was abrupt as well.

My Rating:
1.0/5 - No matter how good the reviews are, please do not watch it. The reason why I gave 1.o is for the Renee Zellweger's acting skills.
